We talk a lot about how the cloud is growing in utilization, and considering the circumstances of the past 18 or so months, it’s not surprising. However, what might be surprising to you is that this movement to the cloud is not necessarily to the detriment of the on-site data center. In fact, there are several reasons why businesses still consider in-house data centers to be the ideal solution. But why is this?

A study performed by Enterprise Management Associates on behalf of Pluribus Research examined 263 data center infrastructure professionals in North America and Europe. One of the major takeaways from the study was that cloud deployment is not necessarily the primary way that businesses are hosting their data; rather, the cloud is largely being used as a supplementary method while organizations host the bulk of their data and operations in-house on their own internal networks. In fact, internal IT networks are continuing to grow!

Why Host In-House?

There are many reasons why organizations might prefer to host their data or applications in-house rather than in the cloud. Several of the reasons outlined in the study for why businesses opt to host applications in-house are the following:

  • Security: 48%
  • Performance: 40%
  • Compliance: 37%
  • Cost: 29%

Notable Obstacles

When you have both in-house infrastructure and cloud-based infrastructure, there are bound to be some complications that organizations need to consider. According to the study, the biggest hiccups that challenge organizations are the following:

  • Network architecture complexity: 43%
  • Network operations complexity: 40%
  • Application architecture complexity: 32%
